A beloved Channel 4 series which won multiple awards in its one and only season has been axed as the show’s executive producer said there were “new people in charge”.

Channel 4 have decided to end The Gathering, a gripping thriller series set on Merseyside which follows the aftermath of an attack on a teenage girl at a rave.

The six-part show starred Sadie Soverall, best known for her performances in Saltburn and Fate: The Winx Saga, as Jessica and Sherlock star Vinette Robinson as her mum Natalie. Also featuring were Hollyoaks and Shameless actor Warren Brown and newcomer Eva Morgan.

Despite only running for a single series, The Gathering attracted plenty of plaudits and picked up three awards at the Monte-Carlo Television Festival, winning best series, best actor for Warren Brown and best actress for Eva Morgan.

However, it has not been renewed for a second season and The Sun reports that executive producer Simon Heath said: “The series performed very well for Channel 4 but there are new people in charge and new priorities, meaning The Gathering won’t be coming back.”

The show is still available to stream on Channel 4 but plenty of fans are set to be left disappointed by the show’s cancellation.

Speaking after watching season one, one fan wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Just finished watching The Gathering on Channel 4. Top quality storyline and acting, really hope for a series 2.”
