Travis Kelce was left with a serious bout of imposter syndrome after meeting Prince William earlier this year, mom Donna has revealed.
Kelce met his Royal Highness at one of girlfriend Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour shows at Wembley Stadium over the summer, with the trio and William’s children Prince George, 11, and Princess Charlotte, 9, posing for a famous selfie together backstage after the concert.
Three months on from her NFL-star son’s royal encounter, Donna, 71, has recalled Travis telling her that crossing paths with Prince William was ‘one of the coolest things’.
However, she also opened up on his modest reaction to being in the company of such a high-profile figure.
Donna told Extra about Travis’ thoughts on meeting Prince William: ‘He said that “When you meet people like that, you know when the royals come in or Paul McCartney or Hugh Grant… somebody’s in the suite, you’re just like, who in this picture doesn’t fit? Why am I here and why am I even allowed to talk to these individuals? It just doesn’t seem right.”‘
She then added: ‘But I think he’s handling it pretty well, he’s a pretty friendly guy.’
Travis also discussed his interaction with the English Prince on his New Heights podcast over the summer.
‘Dude, he was the coolest motherf****r,’ he told brother Jason. ‘He was awesome. They were an absolute delight to meet.’
The Kansas City Chiefs tight end also admitted he didn’t know how to greet Prince William and his children when they first met.
‘[I] wasn’t sure if I was supposed to, like, bow to them, curtsy, just be an American idiot and shake their hand,’ he added.
Despite already being one of the greatest tight ends in football history, Kelce’s profile has skyrocketed since he began dating Swift last year.
The pair have developed into one of the most famous celebrity couples on the planet over the past 12 months, and Donna says her boy is loving the extra attention.
‘He’s always been one to be in the limelight. He loves attention. I mean it, he’s always dancing, always joking around, always having fun… he just loves life,’ she revealed.
‘It just seems like his life is on a trajectory that just is rising every single day. Every time I turn around, I’m seeing him doing something different – whether it’s on the golf course, or at a concert, or whatever, he’s just having his best life right now.’
While he is loving life off the field, Kelce is having a difficult time on it right now after making his worst ever start to an NFL season.
The 34-year-old has just eight catches for 69 yards through Kansas City’s first three games of the season – his lowest ever return across a three-game period.
