A fifth Matrix movie is officially moving forward at Warner Bros.

According to Variety, the next film in the Matrix film franchise is currently in development, with Drew Goddard set to write and direct.

Drew Goddard is best known for his work on The Martian and The Cabin in the Woods.

This marks the first Matrix instalment not helmed by the Wachowskis, although Lana Wachowski will serve as an executive producer.

Cast and specific plot details are currently being kept under wraps.

Plot details are also tightly under wraps, but Jesse Ehrman, the president of production at Warner Bros. Motion Pictures, hints that the story will push the fantasy world forward while staying true to what made the series popular.

Jesse Ehrman said in a statement, “Drew came to Warner Bros. with a new idea that we all believe would be an incredible way to continue the Matrix world, by both honouring what Lana and Lilly began over 25 years ago and offering a unique perspective based on his own love of the series and characters.”

He continued, “The entire team at Warner Bros. Discovery is thrilled for Drew to be making this new ‘Matrix’ film, adding his vision to the cinematic canon the Wachowskis’ spent a quarter of a century building here at the studio.”

No release date has been set at the time of writing.

Vertical has released a new official US trailer for Maïwenn‘s French period drama Jeanne du Barry, starring herself and Johnny Depp.

The trailer introduces Depp as Louis XV and shows Maïwenn’s Jeanne du Barry meeting him for the first time at his court in Versailles.

The royal scandal deepens as Louis XV and Jeanne fall in love against all propriety and etiquette, with the trailer highlighting the film’s exquisite production design, period-accurate costumes, and compelling performances.

The official synopsis for the movie reads, “Jeanne du Barry follows Jeanne Vaubernier (Maïwenn), a working-class woman determined to climb the social ladder, using her charms to escape her impoverished life.”

“Her lover, the Comte du Barry (Melvil Poupaud), wishes to present her to King Louis XV (Johnny Depp) and orchestrates a meeting through the influential Duke of Richelieu (Pierre Richard).”

“The encounter goes far beyond his expectations for it was love at first sight for the King and Jeanne.”

“Through this ravishing courtesan, the king rediscovers his appetite for life and feels he can no longer live without her. Making Jeanne his last official mistress, scandal erupts as no one at Court will accept a girl from the streets into their rarified world.”

The period drama also stars Pierre Richard, Benjamin Lavernhe, Noémie Lvovsky, Pascal Greggory, Melvil Poupaud, and India Hair in prominent roles.
