White Pocket, a small geological treasure of Arizona

The White Pocket is a small patch of sandstone tucked away in the vast desert expanse of Vermillion Cliffs National Monument. It is located just near the Arizona-Utah border, not far from Page. It is a place with extraordinary geological formations, where nature has designed a landscape dominated by an infinity of canyons, arches, terraces, galleries and rock compositions with the most bizarre and surreal shapes and colors. It is an uncontaminated territory of 118,852 hectares, shaped by rain and wind over millions of years and is considered one of the most incredible corners of our planet.

In the vastness of this magnificent area is the White Pocket area, a thin rocky layer with pinkish colors that seems to be covered in icing sugar. This geological beauty surprisingly has no reliable explanation pertaining to its origin. Some geologists argue that it was formed following an earthquake whic probably occurred in the Jurassic period. It is believed that a portion of sandy soil collapsed and was mixed with water and then solidified over the millennia, transforming itself into this wonderful colored expanse that we can admire today.

The White Pocket, made famous just a few years ago by a National Geographic photographic publication, is now one of the most visited destinations for walkers on the Vermillion Cliffs. Naturally this is a fragile area and although a permit is not required, as is required for other sites, its access is limited to a few people a day. There are no refreshment areas, hotels or toilets, there are no stations or petrol stations and no internet connection. Cell phones remain silent and to get there it is recommended to book an organized tour which.
